Bibliographical Note:
Rita Potter is a Ridgefield native who was born in 1916 in the house at the top of Catoonah Street. Her parents were Irish immigrants. Her father worked on various estates in Ridgefield including the Buckley estate on West Mountain Road. Rita and her sister Patsy Potter McManus attended the one room school house nearby.
Rita joined the United States Marine Corps Women’s Reserve in 1943 and was stationed in Washington, D.C. She was one of the 22,000 women that joined the Corps during World War II. In this clip she remembers the day she left home to serve her country.
