In the navy,Walter attended radio school and trained as a member of a Combat Communications Team. Their job was to coordinate logistics from ship to shore. They would land with the marines and position themselves near a first aid station where they would radio back to the ship and tell them what was needed.

In this clip Walter told about his assignment to a ship in the Pacific in June 1944, near the island of Saipan in the Mariana Islands. After two days of heavy bombardment of the island, he and the members of his team went ashore early the next morning.
