Burying Ground: Archeology/History Proposal Outline

Questions to be answered:
1. Unknown size, location & historical extent ( Ref: Walsh P. 47 -49)
2. Who originally buried there: Names, Patriots/British (Ref: Monument photo, R in Review)
3. Remains still present ??? ( Ref: Photo - one visible broken marker still present)
4. When/Where/What Extent remains moved ?? ( Ref: J. Tobin, Fairfield County History, )
5. Verify “Claims” of additional Tombstones, Corners etc. (Ref: J. Tobin, Selectmen minutes)
6. (Re-) Location of Cemetery & Public Highway Roads (Ref: Timeline, BofR Map, Walsh P.48)
7. Verify Congregational Church “Burying Yard/Olde Town) records
Pre – Survey Requirements:
1. Local/State/Federal cemetery investigation “Guidelines” understood
2. On-site CT. State Staff (CT C&T and Archeologist) survey visit
3. Review & certify all project research documents & catalogue/copy
4. Obtain necessary permits, approvals, letters of recommendation, etc.
5. Cemetery Site preparation & clearing (Garden Club staff).
6. State Archives “Search & History” of the Cemetery’s site.
7. Equipment capabilities: Ground, asphalt, power, etc.
8. Grant Creation, Draft/Final, Submission & Approval
On-Site Research Events:
1. Size & extent of the Burying Yard/Ground Site (esp. the “corner markers)
2. Remains: # still there or moved to Olde Town or ???
3. Any (buried) Corner Stone Markers remaining & location
4. Historical Path & Road location(s) and public access/gates
5. Identification of (any) remains (esp. Colonial & British soldiers)
Post-Visit Activities:
1. Data Analysis (Site Survey & Ground Radar)
2. Site Visit – Final Report - Photos & Video Documentation
3. Addition Maintenance & Actions – Certifications & Grants ???
4. State/National Cemetery Designation
